Habit Reversal Training (HRT)

HRT Therapy in PA & MD

What is HRT?

Habit Reversal Training (HRT) is an evidence-based behavioral treatment for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) such as hair pulling (trichotillomania), skin picking (excoriation disorder), nail biting, and other repetitive habits. BFRBs can occur automatically or in response to urges, stress, boredom, or sensory cues, making them difficult to interrupt without targeted strategies.

HRT helps individuals become more aware of when and how the behavior occurs and teaches them to use a competing response—a safer, incompatible action that can be used when an urge arises. Treatment may also include identifying triggers, modifying the environment, and strengthening support and accountability. Over time, HRT can help reduce the frequency and intensity of BFRBs while increasing confidence and a greater sense of control.

How Does HRT Work?

1

Increase Awareness

Clients learn to notice the behavior, the urge that comes before it, and the situations, emotions, or sensations that may trigger it.

2

Identify Patterns & Triggers

Together, we look for patterns that make the behavior more likely, such as stress, boredom, certain environments, or sensory experiences.

3

Learn a Competing Response

Clients practice a specific action that is physically incompatible with the repetitive behavior and can be used when an urge begins.

4

Practice in Real-life Situations

The competing response and other coping strategies are practiced in everyday situations so they become easier to use when urges occur.

5

Strengthen Support & Maintain Progress

Clients refine what works, build consistency, and develop strategies for managing future urges, setbacks, and high-risk situations.
